It’s been a while again since I’ve written, but I’ve been busy as ever, trying lots of new things both at home and out and about. I thought I’d share them with you to let you know what I’m up to!
I’m pained to admit it but until last Sunday I hadn’t cooked with venison or beetroot. I’d only recently eaten both, thanks to Lady Nom and chef Ernst van Zyl respectively, but I finally got around to using them myself. I’d picked up some venison sausages and made a pretty lovely slow-cooked puff pastry pie with them. It was excellent, thick and meaty; the venison gorgeous and to make a pie was a great idea.
Regular readers and followers on Twitter will know I’ve been a big fan of all that Penelope creates from their many outlets. I especially loved their Christmas pop up which I wrote about here. Penelope’s Kitchen has opened in Media City last week and we popped down on Friday to say hello and see their cool new digs.
It’s a New York style restaurant, with salads, pancakes, awesome cooked breakfasts as well as a big and a fab selection of drinks. It’s really relaxed, walk in and either relax into a big couch or one of their picnic benches. We had beers and bowls of macaroni cheese & chilli. Good food and great company as ever. We’ll be back, they’re open Monday – Friday for breakfast and lunch.
Just a quick visit, again a shameful one that I’ve never been before, I was taken here again by the lovely Lady Nom (she inspires me to do new things all the time!) for a quick couple of plates of tapas on Friday during a particularly large drinking session across the road at my old favourite Lock 91. We sat in the lovely little alley restaurant at the back, a great atmosphere and good food. Looks like I’ll have to be back with Mrs B soon!
While suffering from a big hangover from the previous night I went into the city centre to the MFDF hub looking for something to bring me round. I saw the immense words ‘pulled pork hot dog’ I don’t think anything could look better at the time. Piggy Smalls had a stall filled with lots of different sausages and fillings but the pulled pork I had was awesome; big juicy hot dog piled high with pork and barbecue sauce. Seek these people out and try them yourself.
Finally shock horror not food or drink! I was in need of new headphones so managed to get my hands on these little beauties from Ei8htball and they’re pretty good. Amazing sound quality with more than enough cable for me to whizz along my desk while listening to my iPod. I normally have a problem with in-ear phone fitting, weird ears and all that, but there are really good. Will be keeping an eye on these guys to see what else they’re going to be doing.
